Screw this shit, we’re going to Vegas!

Well if you haven’t guessed by now, we’re pretty random people that love what life has to throw at us.  Passing through Vegas on the way to Mexico, we figured that we’d probably get drunk and end up finally tying the knot after 15 years in true rock and roll style. So we decided a little over 12 months ago that we’d invite all our friends to Las Vegas to have one hell of a party.

Viva Las Vegas! Elvis with the bride and groom and our amazing mates

Having spent time living in Australia, Canada and London, and travelled extensively in the 15 years we’ve been together, we had crew from many places across the globe, and this seemed like the perfect chance to get everybody together. Treating it as a kind of ‘not so secret elope’, we told the folks what we’d planned but saved the invites to the relatives for another occasion (other than Sarah’s older brother and twin sister, who both know what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!).

Having 50 of your mates go to great expense to be here, we could not disappoint one of them so we held one mother of a day. We’d don’t quite a bit of planning before arriving in Vegas, so the morning of the big day was spent getting taxi driver Ron to take us around town for the final touches (collect the booze from the van in the carpark, ice from the supermarket etc). Ron was helpful, when he took a wrong turn he put his foot to the floor to help make up the lost time (a whole 5 mins). Jobs done, we got dressed while some of the girls came by for some champagne, inadvertently getting dragged into helping us unload the two luggage trolleys of booze and setup the suite (when we were finally allowed to check in…30 min before the limo arrived…tight!).

With the free limo dropping us, Sarah’s twin sister, older brother and his girlfriend off in style, proceedings got underway at the Graceland Wedding Chapel, where both Bon Jovi and Billy Ray Cyrus got hitched (not intentional but Sarah is a massive Bon Jovi fan). Well it was one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready then go Sarah go. Walked down the aisle by none other than the King himself, Sarah flashed her stiletto Blue Suede Shoes and shimmed along to a packed out chapel of cheering international mates.  Yep, random!   Whilst Matt was saying his vowels, Elvis quietly started to strum on his guitar, and with Sarah gazing into Matt eyes she says ‘Is Elvis playing Metallica?’ He sure was! Having asked around the church where everybody was from he even entertained the majority Australian crowd with a quick rendition of Men at Work’s Land Down Under.

Having finished in the chapel we posed for some obligatory photos (massive thanks to Brit t of Britt Pierson Photography who stepped in two days before the wedding at a really reasonable price when our other photographer ditched us) before it was time for the transportation.  Right on cue an open top red London double decker bus arrives, taking us on a two hour cruise around Sin City. Supplied by Double Decker Bus of Vegas, the amazing staff were on hand to keep us all hydrated with booze we’d dropped off to them the day before (they’ll even buy your ice if you leave some cash!).  Matt had commandeered the sound system and pimped out the trip to nothing but party/gangsta rap (Snoop Dogg, Dre, Outkast, Mystikal.)

Britt the photographer asked us if we would like the traditional style of photos, ie. The Bellagio fountains and such. We were like ‘Hell no!’ and he got it right away, directing the bus driver to some dodgy back alleys with graffiti murals, outside the Stratosphere, and our only must, the ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign. We made such a scene that random people were taking photos of our group all posing under the sign for our favourite photo hat trick – the smile, the jump shot, and the all time favourite, the group look away.

Having finished the booze (a lot I might add) we retired to the reception at our Vista Suite on the 31st floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort, where we’d scattered props to add some colour and fun to the photos.  Matt being the door man, allowed the guests to enter and be in awe of the view that took in the entire strip below, with the iconic Luxor pyramid right next door.

Briefly we took a moment in our other room to construct the wedding cake, made of Cheese and Biscuits!!!  For those that don’t know, Matt’s nickname is Cheese and Sarah’s is Biscuits (or Bickies), goes great together hey? Also to we’d not yet managed to find time to practice the wedding dance, so this was the only time and we practiced it once.

Arriving back into the room with cake in hand and dance rehearsal done, we cut the cake and swiftly dove into the dance.

Ladies and Gentleman,
Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for
The world famous Jack Rabbit Slims Twist Contest!

And with this we (hopefully) nailed the moves to the Pulp Fiction favourite and had the rest of the party laughing, ready to take the night away with some ‘…stays in Vegas’ antics. By the end of the night we felt we had done our friends the service that each of them had done for us on many an occasion; to give them another memorable night that will be remembered (mostly) forever.
